PETER'S CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

  • My dad started road racing in the sixties, but he had a crash and broke his leg quite badly.

  • When I was four and Louis was seven, my dad built us a little motorbike and sidecar.

  • Then he took us to Pilling Beach, the local beach by us where a lot of speedway riders go.

  • My dad and a few friends got the Lancashire grasstrack started up.

  • I rode grasstrack through the schoolboys, till I was fifteen. But mostly my bike wasn't fast enough. I was on a low-cost budget like the Collins boys.

  • I used to go to Belle Vue a few times. We always went to the British League Riders' Championship, you couldn't move and there must have been 20,000 in the stadium. I remember we used to go to the fair.

  • I think I first rode when I was thirteen, and Louis was sixteen and had started racing at Ellesmere. The first time I rode was at Crewe, a massive track, riding Louis' grasstrack bike. I missed the seat and it dragged me right round the track dangling by the handlebars! I did a full lap on my knees.

  • From there I went to Ellesmere Port, and the Chris Morton Training Schools.

  • By late 1979 I made the Ellesmere Port team. I used to stay with Eric Monaghan and go to work with him - not that I ever did anything, because he worked on the turkey farms and I used to hate it. We were both racing for a team place - in fact I think I got in the team when he was injured.
