PETER'S CAREER HIGHLIGHTS (con.)

  • I remember getting third in the Northern Riders at Belle Vue in 1983. Peter Collins stuffed me in the third place run-off. We'd had a bad meeting at Wimbledon the night before and we were all threatened with the sack.

  • That year I reached the Final of the European Under-21. I drove out to the quarter final with the bikes, and I think Neil Evitts flew out. The track was good in practise, the bike was all right, then me and Neil went out on the town for the night, and got back in the morning to find everyone working on their bikes!

  • Neil won that meeting, then Steve Baker and I. The next round was in Czechoslovakia - I broke the track record and scored 14 points. I was one of the favourites for the final in Italy, but I blew my engine in practise and used Neil Evitts' spare bike for the meeting.

  • I think I scored 8 from my first three rides but then went downhill for some reason. But I did have a good time!

  • I scored a maximum for Belle Vue in the League Cup final against Coventry and beat Ole Olsen. I beat Ole quite a few times round Belle Vue, I was quite happy about that.

BELLE VUE 1984: Mark Courtney, Kenny McKinna, Chris Morton (on bike), Larry Ross, Peter Carr, (Kneeling) Peter Collins, Andy Smith.
