The Motor Show

3rd September 1999

On a fine sunny day, a great crowd gathered at Armadale to pay tribute to the man who had transfored speedway at the venue - Peter 'The Motor' Carr.

Peter himself was rather nervous about the event, but he needn't have worried because it was a huge success. The field of riders was made of by men he had been friendly with over the years, and they gave their all to entertain.

THE TEAMS

EDINBURGH: (PC missing), Kevin Little, Ross Brady, James Grieves, David McAllan BELLE VUE: Mick Powell, Les Collins, Kenny McKinna, Joe Screen, Brian Turner
SHEFFIELD: Andre Compton, Sean Wilson, Carl Stonehewer, Sean Courtney, Aidan Collins NEWCASTLE: Jesper Olsen, Martin Dixon, Tom Graham (manager), Blair Scott, Jonathan Swales, Scott Lamb

The meeting opened with track record attempts by Joe Screen (56.9) and Carl Stonehewer (58.1) on a track that was a bit too slick. Joe's first Armadale ride was sensational.

Poor Stoney had to go straight from this into heat 1!

The contest was pretty close early on except that Newcastle's team was a little weak. Here is some of the early action -

There was glamour at the event too, provided by the Armabelles.

To close things up a bit, Golden Doubles were permitted. Andre Compton did one and grabbed a second place, and although the other was announced as Jonny Swales he looked very like Joe Screen!

In the end Belle Vue emerged the winners of the team contest.

Grieves and Compton

Stonehewer and McKinna

On an occasion like this there had to be some wheelies, and these were provided spectacularly by Peter and Joe who had spent the afternoon practising at Linlithgow. The completed well over a lap completely vertical!

Joe

... and PC!

To round off the evening, the very popular De'il Tak the Hindmost finoshed - PC, Joe, Jesper, Stoney, Mick, though to be fair Joe held back at the line to let PC take the win - something the guest of honour hadn't wanted!

Which just left the presentations before everyone left for the party!
